. tonight team coverage. start with chief meteorologist, with a closer look at sandy's path. doug? >> we are starting to get into what sandy is bringing us, winds. rains, look outside. probably hear the rain coming down. the wind. strongest, about, 12 to 24 hours away. the rain has begun. let's take a look and show you. outside right now. the rain coming through parts of the area. just about everybody seeing a good light-to-mod rerate rain. some picking up heavy rain. notice yellow, rain, eastern shore, down into portions of southern maryland. this area has already received upwards of 5 to 10 inches of rain. once again, just getting started with the storm as it continues to make its way in from the east you. can see what i am talking about with the yellow areas. over towards cambridge. in through the south. southern portions of st. mary's county. some areas, close to 10. you notice the rain just continues to make its way in from the east. take a look at the wider view. you also see some of the first real band of sandy. right now making their way on to shore. ocea city. lewis delaware. th

it started about 25 minutes ago. our hurricane sandy coverage begins with chief meteorologist doug kammerer, who has been tracking the storm throughout the day. doug? >> yeah, watching this storm out there right now, you can see where this is. right now, down through portions of cape may county, new jersey, that's where it's coming ashore right now. it was moving extremely fast, at 28 miles an hour. but looking at some of the latest imagery here, it looks like it's really starting to slow down. waiting to see what's going on. you can notice very dry air wrapping around the center. and the rain just cutting off. right now, right around the philadelphia area. they're no longer seeing the heavy rain. we, however, are continuing to see the heavy rain. the latest advisory as of 5:00, had winds of 90 miles an hour. a very strong category 1 storm. the pressure down to 940 millibars. this storm has now set all-time low pressure records for atlanticcity, for trenton, new jersey and for philadelphia. all-time lowest pressure ever recorded. and that goes back to the super storm of '93. even b

declared across our entire area. doug kammerer right now is here to explain why we should keep a close eye on this one. >> the reason for this, jim, is not because we have a hurricane to the south. it's because what's going to be happening after. this right now, it says it's a hurricane, but most likely it's a tropical storm. but do not let that fool. the 8:00 advisory, i bet it will come out as tropical storm sandy, but it doesn't matter, don't let a weakening storm now fool you later. because this storm is going to continue to make its way up the coast. right now has winds of 57 miles an hour. that was the latest as of the 5:00 advisory from the national hurricane center, moving to the north at 7 miles per hour. it is expected to become a tropical storm most likely around 00, 11:00 advisory. the track is what you want to focus on here. the cone of uncertainty takes it anywhere from boston, to the richmond area and anywhere in between is going to see very strong winds. not going to be the rain, most likely not the flooding in our region, it will be the winds. let's take a look

's begin with doug cameron tracking the storm. doug, what are we looking forward to next? >> we're looking forward to this storm beginning to weaken. it's trying to do that, but not yet. they just put out a new statement -- the national weather service put out a new statement. it still has sustained winds of 75 miles per hour in parts of the area. those are coming right over northeastern parts of maryland and delaware. we're continuing to see winds gusting over tropical storm force in new york, philadelphia, washington, latest wind gusts are 47 miles an hour after a 60 mile an hour wind gust. it may be coming down a little bit, but we're going to continue to see these periodic gusts throughout the rest of the night. you can see exactly where the center of circulation is right here. there's the center coming right over the northern portion of the chesapeake right now. it will continue to the west, right along the mason dixon line. let's zoom on in. you can see this band here, a fairly heavy band of rain and wind continuing across the region. washington, down toward waldorf and winchester. s

coverage begins with chief meteorologist doug kammerer. this storm seems to be right on schedule. >> it really does. it is now moving close to 30 miles an hour. it has made a beeline for the jersey coast. it is now just to the north and coming ashore. you can see what's going on. a ton of rain on the west side of the storm. but notice, the strongest side, normally the northeast corner here, that's where you see the strongest winds, 84-mile-an-hour wind gusts in long island. notice the rain here, really cutting off on the back side, as it makes its way in. we'll continue to see rain here, though, as we continue to be on the southwest side of the storm. here's atlantic city. here's the ey coming onshower right now. atlantic city, probably seeing the strongest winds they have seen in years. maybe even decades right now. potentially 90, 100-mile-an-hour winds with this storm. you can see the outer eye wall which is right here through cape may county, new jersey, along the delaware bay. we're watching this rig around rehoboth beach. they're probably seeing very strong winds out of the

. but we could be in for a round of strong storms. storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is monitoring our conditions this afternoon. >> right now, this afternoon, looking very, very nice. temperatures of 70 degrees currently. the winds gusting at times upwards of 15 to 25 miles an hour. the airport only about 8 miles an hour, the winds out of the south. we are also seeing plenty of cloud cover, but also peaks and pokes of sunshine, too. take a look at the numbers around the region. most everybody into the 70s to the east. 60s back to the west. 65 in hagerstown, 64 in winchester, 71 in la plata. 74 degrees towards fredericksburg. no rain around our region right now. but over the next couple of hours we'll see an area down to the south, a few showers could turn into a few thunderstorms as it moves farther to the north. this would get to our area in the next two to three hours. here's the frontal boundary back to the west. it has strong to potentially severe storms with it. this will continue to move our way. it will be making its way through this area in the late evening a

even stronger today as it moves over jamaica and heads to cuba. doug kammerer has more on how sandy could have an impact on us here. doug? >> it really could have an impact on our weather as we make our way into the weekend and early next week. hurricane sandy with winds of 80 miles an hour, just off the coast of the eastern portions of jamaica right now. really hit that eastern side very, very hard. winds upwards of 80 miles an hour, with stronger gusts. trees down, power outages there. now it's on its way over toward cuba. video a little bit earlier this morning as it was making its way onshore. the incredible surf this storm is producing, we'll see it move up the east coast over the next few days. it will be in cuba, bahamas, florida, carolina also, and portions of the northeast. the potential is there for this to be a very dangerous storm. here it is right there. winds right now 80 miles an hour. moving to the north at 14 miles per hour. on that track, moves very close to miami, just off the coast there. and then right up the coast, staying offshore through most of this time per

of ours. >> gregg: doug is live in delaware where residents are anxiously preparing for sandy? >> it is basically here right now. winds are gusting probably about 30 miles an hour. gusting a bit more than that. gust comes along and knocks you off your feet a little bit. this is shaping up in this area as a classic storm coming out of north-northeast. it is typically in this region. nor'easters cause more damage than hurricanes. it's called the ash wednesday storm of 1962, johnf. kennedy was president. hundreds of buildings were destroyed in this area, literally thousands of buildings were badly damaged. president kennedy declared a disaster area. because of that and characteristics of this storm so closely mirror that, the governor of delaware has called for a mandatory evacuation all people are suppose to that out of the beach by 8:00 p.m. tonight. by our perusal of the beach a lot of people are not heeding that advice. we a that you sau a couple people step in the surf. authorities got them out of the waves. a little while ago i saw a woman running down the beach with a todd
